Possibility of Reviving NORD-OST in Moscow is Under Question
November 14, 2002
On November 13, 2002 at the meeting of administration and employees of the NORD-OST musical, all members of staff were given notifications of the possible forthcoming dismissal. In two months the personnel of the LINK production company (over 300 people) will be left without jobs in case the process of the revival of NORD-OST on the same stage is not launched.
The Federal Government and the Moscow Mayor’s Office insist on restoring the performance on the stage of the Dubrovka Theatre Center. Moreover, the federal and city authorities are already factually engaged in the implementation of this plan. Works on the repair and restoration of the building of the Theatre Center at Dubrovka are in full swing and are performed by "Glavmosstroy" on the instruction of Yu. M. Luzhkov, the Mayor of Moscow. The Ministry on Labour and Social Development of the Russian Federation promised to provide funds for making compensations to the employees of LINK in order for the production company to be able to preserve the artistic team of NORD-OST during the restoration period (2-3 months).
At the same time, in spite of the help from the state and city authorities, the revival of NORD-OST in Moscow is still under question. For the renewal of the performance it is not enough just to refurbish the theatre building and to prevent the personnel from leaving the company. It is necessary to launch anew the destroyed mechanism of the theatrical performance, which includes the scenic sets, costumes, props, sound amplification, lighting, video projections, technological communication system, etc. Unfortunately, it is for these purposes, for actual revival of the performance, that the project still lacks money. The preliminary estimate shows that the implementation of these tasks will require from 15 to 25 mln. roubles. So far (as of 14.11.02) the voluntary donations for the revival of the musical were made in the amount of 4,8 mln. roubles and consist mostly of contributions of two companies: Russian Bank of Development (3,18 mln. roubles) and Moscow Investment Real Estate Agency (1,59 mln. roubles). Also, the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation intends to allocate 3 mln. roubles. But even taking into account this support from state, the collected amount will not be sufficient for the revival of NORD-OST in Moscow.
Even if the possibility of restoring NORD-OST at the Theatre Center at Dubrovka is still doubtful, the creation of the touring version of NORD-OST becomes rather realistic. The "Open Russia" Foundation allocates $2 mln. for these purposes. It should be noted, that the touring version is actually a new performance with the actor company and orchestra of its own, with the specially constructed scenic sets and new staging. The launch of the touring version of NORD-OST will require months of preparation. Unfortunately, very substantial support from the “Open Russia” Foundation does not solve the problem of reviving the performance in Moscow and preserving the existing personnel. But if we manage to revive the musical at Dubrovka, there will be two NORD-OST performances: one in Moscow running on a daily basis and the other – the touring performance travelling over the cities of Russia.
We would like to thank with all our hearts those people and organizations which contributed to the restoration of NORD-OST. We rely on the help which is yet to come and hope that it will be sufficient for the revival of the performance.
