The legendary creator of "Les Miserables" has visited NORD-OST
October 11, 2002
Claude-Michel Schonberg, composer, author of the famous musicals "Les Miserables" and "Miss Saigon" attended the performance on October 9, 2002 - the last night before his departure from Moscow.
The composer said that his friends highly recommended him to see the Russian musical. The visit of the legend of the world scene has become a surprise for the creators of NORD-OST: before yesterday's night they have not even dreamed of making acquaintance with the great musician, let alone presenting their own creation to his judgement. The visit of the esteemed colleague to the NORD-OST musical has become a remarkable present for the authors of our musical on the eve of the first anniversary of the performance.
They have always stressed that "Les Miserables" is a model of an epic musical for them. It was on the sample of this production that Georgi Vasiliev and Aleksei Ivaschenko mastered the intricacies of creating large-scale theatre projects.
"I think that you are working for the benefit of your country's progress when creating your own musical and not importing one from abroad. We, the French, thought like this when producing "Les Miserables" and it turned out that we created it for the whole of the world, - said Claude-Michel Schonberg in his conversation with the authors and actors after the performance.
He congratulated his Russian colleagues with the brilliant work and shared his experience with them: "When we were staging "Les Miserables" for the first time, everybody, excluding Cameron Mackintosh, the producer who made the project to be realised, kept saying: "You are crazy! It is not right! It is not a musical! It cannot be performed in English!" Nobody could even imagine at that time that the show would be running on stage for twenty years. I hope that it will be the same way with yours."
Claude-Michel Schonberg's private visit to Moscow lasted five days. His long-cherished dream had been to fly on board a jet-propelled fighter. Several days ago his dream came true in Russia.
