NORD-OST Flag is Hoisted in the North Pole
April 11, 2002
"NORD-OST flag is hoisted in the North Pole", Aleksei Ivaschenko - a well known song writer and performer, one of the authors of the first Russian daily-running musical NORD-OST - told the RIA NOVOSTI reporter on Wednesday in a telephone interview from the extreme northern point of our planet. The "team" representing the musical also included his co-author Georgii Vasilyev and two leading actors, Ekaterina Guseva (Katya Tatarinova) and Andrey Bogdanov (Sanya Grigoriev). The undying motto of polar explorers - "To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield" - is written on the flag installed in the "meeting point" of meridians. In the silence of vast ice desert the actors sang "live" the fragments from the musical which tells us about Captain Tatarinov's tragic story and the search for the traces of his expedition.
"The weather is excellent in the North Pole, the sun is shining brightly, it is about 40 degrees below zero and we are in very good spirits", Ivaschenko said. "We reached our destination by helicopter landing approximately in a hundred meters from the place where any direction is a Southern one. Then, with the help of precise devices we determined the point where the terrestrial axis should be situated, if it were to exist in reality." It is at this place that the NORD-OST flag has been hoisted (by the way, all NORD-OST actors left their signatures on it in Moscow)".
The long way from the Russian capital to the extreme Northern point of the planet was started by the NORD-OST team the previous day. The flight was one day delayed because of bad weather conditions in the North. The plane landed on the improvised runway arranged on a drifting ice-float. Not far from this aerodrome a temporary polar camp had been set up.
Actually, travel is professional occupation for the authors of the musical. Vasiliev and Ivaschenko graduated from the Geographic Department of the Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov.
The NORD-OST musical based on "Two Captains", a novel by V. Kaverin, premiered in Moscow on October 19, 2001. 160 performances have been shown since then and over 178 thousand people have seen the musical.
The travel has become possible due to the assistance of the Ultra-Travel tour company. The NORD-OST team was included into the fist group of tourists who will be able to visit the North Pole. These tours have been organised by the company jointly with AO "Vnukovo-Terminal" and under the patronage of the Russian Association of Polar Explorers to mark the anniversary dates in the history of polar exploration by the Russian travellers, scientists, and researchers - and also to promote tours to the northern parts of our country.
