Nord-Ost: Conquering the North Pole

March 21, 2002

The extreme northern point of the Earth – the North Pole – became the next target for the creative team of Nord-Ost, the famous Russian musical.

This risky trip will be started in the beginning of April, 2002, by Georgii Vasilyev and Aleksei Ivaschenko (the Nord-Ost authors), Alexander Tsekalo (one of the producers of the musical), Ekaterina Guseva (the performer of the role of Katya Tatarinova) and Andrey Bogdanov (starring in the role of Sanya Grigoriev).

The only company in Russia that undertook to assist in the implementation of these audacious plans is Ultra-Travel specializing in extreme tourism.

The participants in this trip will fly en route Murmansk – Shpitsbergen – the North Pole by AN-74 freighter. All in all, they will cover about 4,000 km. The group will start from Moscow at 5.30 p.m. and will arrive at the point of destination the following morning at 4.30 a.m. The plane will land on the improvised runway arranged on a drifting monolithic ice-float, the closest to the trip target. Not far from this improvised aerodrome a temporary polar camp will be set up of mobile modules. The expedition will have to live for several days in these extreme conditions. At this time of the year the temperature in the North Pole region is around 30 degrees below zero, thus the Nord-Ost creative team will demonstrate the veracity of one of the key ideas of this performance: our people can not be conquered even when it is 31 degrees below zero.

The travelers will reach the North Pole itself by helicopter. At the point where the imaginary terrestrial axis is located, it is planned to hoist the Nord-Ost flag with the undying motto of polar explorers on it in Russian and in English "To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield".

Heroic musical themes from Nord-Ost will be performed by professional actors in the unlimited ice expanses - the fact truly worthy of inclusion into the Book of World Records.

This daring expedition of the Nord-Ost creative team has become possible due to Ultra-Travel, the company which supported the arrangement of this trip.

The participants in the press-conference held on March 14, 2002: Arthur Chilingarov (Vice-Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Hero of the Soviet Union), Alexander Tsekalo (Nord-Ost Project Director), Aleksei Ivaschenko (Nord-Ost Art-Director), Ekaterina Guseva and Andrey Bogdanov (performers of the leading roles in the Nord-Ost musical), Mikhail Muraviev (Ultra-Travel General Director), and Vladimir Koshelev (Honoured Polar Explorer).

Nord-Ost Musical - Russian "Extreme"

Seeking the target which seems unattainable is the distinguishable feature of the Nord-Ost project.

The Nord-Ost musical has already demonstrated something that was considered impossible for Russia: the performance has been running daily for five months without a break and there seems to be no end to this marathon in the nearest future. Over 130 performances have been shown by now. It is expected that by April 19, 2002, i.e. for the first half a year passed since the premiere, over 200 thousand people will have seen the musical. Thus, Nord-Ost, having chosen an extreme economic model for theatre entertainment, has become the first daily-running performance in our country.

It seemed that this economic principle was not the only risky thing in Nord-Ost. The musical is based on the well-known novel "Two Captains" by Veniamin Kaverin, a Soviet writer. This fact was considered a challenge to the public opinion. Theatre critics stated that a performance which declares no "hot" topics can never be successful in the modern society, at least not among the young people. But the public-opinion poll held among the Nord-Ost audience contradicts the sceptics' forecasts: 95% of the respondents are so much satisfied with the performance that they are going to recommend it to their relatives and friends. Moreover, 40% of the participants in the poll would like to attend the musical again. According to the results of the survey, 36% of the audience is represented by young people not older than 22. The goals set before the creative team of the musical were also considered fantastic by theatre professionals. Zinovy Margolin, Nord-Ost scenic designer, had to find the solution for the seamless flow of 40 scenic episodes, to land a life-size plane on the stage and to create the imaginary vision of the schooner lost in the Arctic expanses. Maria Danilova, costume designer, created almost 400 costumes for 180 characters appearing in the musical. Nord-Ost actors present a complex psychological drama performance, live singing, dancing and risky acrobatic stunts. The musical also features children who perform together with the professional actors.

To sum it up, Nort-Ost is familiar with extreme tasks! The expedition to the North Pole following the traces the real explorers whose heroic deeds are described in the performance is the new form of implementation of those human life principles which are advocated by the creative team of the Nord-Ost musical.
