February 07, 2003

February 8th 2003: the premiere of the revived musical NORD-OST in Moscow.
The actors of the NORD-OST musical are entering the renewed stage to bring back to the audience the beautiful performance whose shows were interrupted in October 2002.
NORD-OST is a unique phenomenon in the Russian culture. It is the first theatre of one performance in Russia: the musical ran for over a year - from October 19, 2001 to October 23, - on a daily schedule, thus breaking an absolute record in the history of the national theatre. Night after night, against any expert forecasts, the audience filled the house to take to heart the romantic story of love created on the basis of the popular novel "Two Captains" by Veniamin Kaverin. Over 300 thousand spectators have seen the performance for the first year of its run. On October 18, 2002, when congratulating the NORD-OST company on the first-year anniversary, the producers of musicals running in Moscow noted that other Moscow theatrical projects can not help but dream of such stable interest from the public which has been permanently accompanying NORD-OST.
NORD-OST was highly estimated by Claude-Michel Schönberg, a prominent composer and author of "Les Miserables", one of the most successful musicals in the world. He predicted that the Russian performance would have great future and acknowledgement not only in this country but also abroad.
After the October events the question of whether to revive the musical or not was never even raised by the theatre staff. We knew that we should do it against all the odds. The spirit of NORD-OST - the atmosphere of friendship, loyalty and love - lived in our hearts and kept us together. We found support in the words and music of NORD-OST and knew that our audience needed it not less than we did.
At first the idea was to change the venue. But then it was decided to return to our home: the same as people return to their native town ruined by war - in order to build the new houses and to bring life and joy back to its streets. Thousands of people have helped NORD-OST. Moscow builders fully reconstructed the building of the Theatre Center at Dubrovka at the expense of the city budget. The main changes were made to the hall - it was reordered, the red seats were replaced with the new gray-blue ones, a sliding partition was built at the orchestra pit, the gray curtain is now painted in the socialist-art style.
The damage caused to the theatre equipment equaled 23.3 mln roubles. It was almost fully compensated by charity contributions - 22.7 mln roubles were received for these purposes, of which one-fifth came from federal and city budgets. The rest of the donations were made by non-state institutions and private persons, of which 10 mln roubles came from the Russian Union for Industrialists and Entrepreneurs. The Ministry of Trade and Social Development of the Russian Federation allocated 13.2 mln roubles as the salary fund for the staff of the company for the three-month-long forced break in the run.
NORD-OST to be seen in Moscow again is both the old performance and the new one simultaneously. The personnel of the company almost did not change, the same brilliant cast of actors whose performance fascinated the public last year will be seen on the stage again. The libretto and music were not changed, but modifications were introduced into all elements of the production: orchestrations, choreography, lighting design, scenery sets and costumes. The creators of the musical made their best for the performance to become even more cheerful and optimistic than before.
The spectators already had the chance to estimate the changes at the previews that took place on February 4th and 5th. The same as before, the audience break into applause when watching the landing on stage of the famous life-size bomber. But, admittedly, the most impressing moment in the performance is now the finale when the magnificent ship is rising from non-existence, breaking the ice of disbelief and despair.
In accordance with the public opinion poll held by COMCON, an independent research company, in December 2002, the Muscovites are rather unanimous in their opinion regarding the future of NORD-OST: 84% of the respondents believe that this performance should live.
Dear spectators, you have been waiting for us to return - and we are back!
