NORD-OST: New Birth
December 30, 2002
The opening night of the revived NORD-OST musical will take place in Moscow at the same address (7 Melnikov St.) on February 8, 2003. The company and theatre staff have lived through the hard times and are doing their utmost to bring this cheerful life-affirming performance to the audience anew.
There arises a natural question if the spectators are interested in the revival of NORD-OST. The answer is unambiguous: “yes”. The COMCON research group held a telephone public opinion poll among Muscovites in December which gave the following results: 84% of the respondents support the approach that the musical should go on, and 65% are inclined to consider that in the present situation the state ought to help reviving NORD-OST. At the same time after the act of terror the number of people willing to attend NORD-OST has reduced. Also people are inclined to postpone their visit to the Theatre Center at Dubrovka for an indefinite time. Evidently, the overwhelming majority of the respondents, though being positive towards NORD-OST, feel real psychological difficulties when it comes to making a decision on the purchase of the ticket.
On the basis of the large-scale support from the government of Moscow LINK Production Company is implementing the program of “social rehabilitation” of the musical itself as well as of the theatre building in order to help the spectators to overcome the psychological barrier. This program includes additional measures on securing the safety of the audience, changes in the scenic design and theatre decoration, propaganda of the revival of the performance, a number of public events and charity performances. The results of the public opinion poll confirm that the potential spectators of NORD-OST expect such support and are very responsive to it.
Besides the sale of tickets, the exchange of the tickets purchased before October 23 for the performances that were not shown, has also been started. These tickets are exchanged for the new ones on a 1-for-1 basis. Exclusion is made for the former hostages. Possibly it will be easier for them to attend the musical in the company of close friends or relatives, so the tickets dated October 23 will be exchanged on a one-to-two basis for any day and for any price category. Some of the former hostages already expressed their intention to attend the opening night of the revived NORD-OST.
Though the NORD-OST team is striving to have everything ready by the required date, the financial situation still remains extremely strenuous.
The damages born by the performance in the result of the act of terror are estimated at 21 mln roubles. At present 15.3 mln roubles have been collected. The greater portion of this amount (12.3 mln roubles) was formed from non-state donations, the major contributions being made by the Russian Union for Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, RBR Group of Companies, and Moscow Real Estate Investment Agency. Private persons of Russia and other countries made over 80 donations in the amount from 100 roubles to 1.6 mln roubles each. Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation allocated 3 mln roubles for the revival of the performance.
Moscow builders are completing the refurbishment of the Theatre Center. The official delivery-acceptance of the repaired facilities from the constructors to NORD-OST is planned for January.
